Sore Throat and Tonsillitis
Contact UsA sore throat is a common condition that can cause pain, irritation and difficulty swallowing. While many sore throats are caused by viral infections and settle on their own, some result from bacterial infections or other underlying conditions that require medical assessment.
Tonsillitis is a specific type of sore throat that occurs when the tonsils become inflamed due to infection. It is particularly common in children but can also affect adults. Symptoms may include swollen tonsils, throat pain, fever, difficulty swallowing and sometimes white patches on the tonsils.
Our ENT consultants provide careful assessment for sore throats and tonsillitis, beginning with a detailed history and examination to identify the underlying cause. Treatment depends on the diagnosis and may include antibiotics for confirmed bacterial infection, pain relief, supportive care or guidance on managing symptoms at home.
For recurrent or severe tonsillitis, a tonsillectomy, which is surgical removal of the tonsils, may be recommended to reduce further episodes and improve quality of life.
Could it be strep throat?
Not all sore throats are the same. Strep throat is caused by group A streptococcus bacteria and can require specific treatment to prevent complications. It often presents with a sudden severe sore throat, fever and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. Unlike many viral sore throats, it does not usually cause a cough.
Understanding the differences can help you decide when to seek medical advice. You can read more in our guide:
Strep Throat Symptoms: What Makes It Different from a Regular Sore Throat?
Persistent throat problems can affect sleep, work and day to day comfort. If symptoms are ongoing, severe or recurring, a specialist assessment can help clarify the cause and guide appropriate treatment.
